About Five Oaks Pure Bred Dog Rescue

tanya amberson bull terrierI was born with a dog leash in my hand, at least, that is how I explain my devotion to canine welfare.  Five Oaks came about as a result of my love of showing and breeding purebred dogs.  With any puppy I place comes a life time guarantee of support and the promise that I will always take back any dog that an owner can no longer keep.  I soon realized that other breeders either did not advocate this approach or their dogs sometimes simply got lost in the abandonment system.  I began to coordinate Bull Terriers needing homes in the Kentucky, Tri-State area.  In the meantime, a friend of mine, Beverly Briggs got interested in the problem of unwanted dogs, especially the Bullie type breeds, when her daughter brought her home a dog for a local shelter that proved to be sick and subsequently died.  She became determined to fight for better conditions in Kentucky shelters and to rescue as many dogs in her area of Rockcastle County, Kentucky as she could.  Our goal at Five Oaks is to bring the right people together with the right dog.  We will work with any dog needing re-homing, but we are especially concerned with the Bullie breeds since many come with behavioral problems through no fault of their own.

Five Oaks is especially interested in educating the public, not just placing dogs, since if the individuals adopting do not understand canine behavior the poor dog may be in the same situation it started with and become abandoned once more.  We are, therefore, not just a rescue group but we see our primary goal as one of support and education.
